SUMMARY
TRADE ONLY! Anyone over the age of 18 may buy acids for testing precious metals for trade, business or professional use but we might need to verify this - see "Restrictions" for details.
Most items you test on an electronic gold tester will be 9ct or 14ct yellow gold, there is no need to test these items with acids!
However, electronic testers are not accurate when testing white gold, can mis-identify platinum and cannot test for silver. Acids can do all of these.
In addition, electronic testers aren't very accurate when testing high-carat gold. They very occasionally confuse 18ct and 22ct, they are never accurate enough to distinguish 18ct from 20ct, 20ct from 22ct or 22ct from 24ct. By contrast, acids distinguish 18ct from 22ct easily, and are far more accurate than electronic testers on 20ct to 24ct.
DETAIL
Use the acids:
- if the electronic tester reads, "22ct". This is because 18ct very occasionally gives a "22ct" reading in error. If in doubt, rely on the acid, it's more reliable than an electronic tester.
- if the metal is white. Use the 'silver/amber; bottle to check for silver. Electronic testers cannot test for silver. Experts know if the item is likely to be silver: a heavy bracelet, a teapot, earrings, anything with a silver hallmark - yes. A diamond ring, an 18ct watch case, anything with a gold hallmark - no.
- if the metal is high-carat yellow gold use the 18ct/blue acid. This will give you accurate results on high-carat gold. See how long it takes to turn yellow on your 18ct calibration sample (typically 3 to 6 seconds), see how long it takes to turn yellow on a sample of 22ct (typically 10 to 20 seconds), know that 24ct takes 2 to 3mns. Count the number of seconds it takes to turn yellow on your unknown item - that will give a very precise reading between 18ct and 24ct.
- if the metal is white and is not silver. The platinum/green acid tests for white gold. White gold can read too high or too low on an electronic tester. The same acid also distinguishes platinum, Palladium and steel, all of which confuse electronic gold testers (i.e. ignore the P/platinum reading on the electronic tester!)
The platinum/blue acid also tests for 14ct yellow gold. This should always match the reading on the electronic tester.
