• Chemicals: no acids involved, the probe contains a harmless salt solution.
• Testing range: 8K to 24K (the ANALYZER is American, different spelling, "Karat' instead of 'carat'). The scale is marked 8K, 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K. The LED scale enables you to see in-between readings, i.e. anywhere between 8K and 10K = 9ct.
• Pen-probe life: up to 5000 tests (replacement pen-probes readily available)
  
• Testing speed: touch pen probe to the item, result shown in 2 or 3 seconds. 
  
• Calibration: one-touch calibration with a sample of exactly 18ct (e.g. a hallmarked item). If you are a trader you will have plenty of 18ct hallmarked gold. If you don't, an 18ct calibration sample is available as an optional extra.

You will need a sample of 18ct yellow gold to 'match' the electronics in the tester to the reading on the display (technical term: calibration). If you are a professional trader you will have some 18ct hallmarked yellow gold. If not, a special 18ct calibration sample is available from us, see OPTIONAL EXTRAS.

Limitations

The ANALYZER is for testing jewellery. We would welcome feedback on how well it tests for gold in other forms (powder, granules, flecks embedded in quartz...) but it is designed for testing jewellery

The ANALYZER works best on yellow gold (readings on white gold vary). It will not test silver. Palladium reads as if gold. This is why every serious jewellery / scrap dealer also uses acids - acids will cope with all of the above (see our  special set of acids for use with electronic testers, Q3-FOR-EGT). 

Probe 

A pen-probe is included with your purchase, if you want a spare, click on View Optional Extras. A pen-probe is guaranteed for one month.

The pen-probe is like a felt pen, if you don't replace the cap firmly it dries out. The manufacturers say it will give "up to 6000 tests". They also say it should be replaced after a year. See more details about pen-probes.

Generally, we find that a pen-probes last between 6 and 18 months but it can be as long as 2 years or as short as 6 weeks - the guaranteed is one month from the date of purchase.
