Read all about how UV light works and what it will detect (fascinating article!)

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Do I need protective glasses when use the uv safe box?

No you don't need protective glasses.

Switch it to white light, turn it upside down, you can see the LEDs.
Switch it to Longwave UV, turn it upside down, you can see the LEDs.
Switch it to Shortwave UV, turn it upside down, you CANNOT see the LEDs because they are set inside the edge of the unit and reflect off a mirror.

  • What are the internal dimensions? How is it to be used as a practical gem/jewellery UV tester?

Maximum (realistic) sample size: 35 X 20mm.  You can certainly fit larger objects but if they are too large they will block the light, this is designed for gemstones or very small mineral samples ...or stamps.

We can’t help you with “using UV light as a diagnostic tool in gemstone identification” – that is more complicated, you will need to research it yourself.  Ideally you need to go on a practical course in gemmology to view different type of fluorescence and phosphorescence in gemstones under different wavelengths.

  • Please can you advise if the wavelengths are 254nm and 365nm?

Yes, correct, as stated in the product description.

  • Is this product helpful in distinguishing amber from plastic ? I have read your fuller description re salt water and hot needles, but hope u will be possible. If so will this item work for me ? Thanks

No, you cannot use UV to distinguish amber from plastics.
