- The tester will require calibrating regularly, you will need a calibration sample, either some hallmarked 18ct or a special calibration sample available as an optional extra.

A pen-probe is included, if you want a spare, select it from "Optional Extras".
You will need a sample of 18ct yellow gold (it must be exactly 18ct). This is to 'match' the electronics in the tester to the reading on the display (technical term: calibration). Anything made of 18ct yellow gold will do, just check carefully that it has a British hallmark (see the hallmark card, included) then you will know it's exactly 18ct. If you are a trader, go through your scrap / jewellery, you are certain to have some 18ct hallmarked yellow gold. If not, an 18ct calibration sample is available from us, see OPTIONAL EXTRAS.

Probe
A pen-probe is included with your purchase, if you want a spare, click on View Optional Extras. A pen-probe is guaranteed for one month.
The pen-probe is like a felt pen, if you don't replace the cap firmly it dries out. The manufacturers say it will give "up to 6000 tests". They also say it should be replaced after a year. See more details about pen-probes.
Generally, we find that a pen-probes last between 6 and 18 months but it can be as long as 2 years or as short as 6 weeks - the guaranteed is one month from the date of purchase.

I don't like the idea of filing the item in case of scratches or damage. Also, do people object or complain about filing and say you have damaged or devalued their item. Regards Pete
You ask two questions.
About filing the item
- it must be filed to remove any surface plating. There is no way round this. It applies to all testers including acid testers, electronic testers and XRF testers
- it is especially important with this type of electronic tester because the tiniest bit of surface contamination can alter the readings
- although you must file it firmly (a light scratch simply isn't good enough) you will be using a fine needle file (included) and that file-mark need only be 1 or 2mm
- there is always* somewhere to file it where it won't show, e.g. the inside of a ring shank, the edge of a clasp, the back of a brooch.* In six years of testing (tens of thousands of items) there was only one occasion when an item was so finely-made that there was absolutely nowhere to file it where it wouldn't show.
About customers complaining
- it will never happen that a customer complains because you will ask their permission first. Show them how small the needle file is (if you don't, they'll think you will be using a woodworking file), tell them it will only make a tiny mark, point to the place where you will file it where it won't show. If they don't give permission, don't file it, don't buy it. Though you could weigh it, calculate the price and tell them what you would pay if it turns out to be that carat when you've filed and tested it.
- how often did a customer refuse permission to file it and simply left the shop? Maybe two or three times in the six years.
- the one exception is rare coins, if you file them you will totally destroy their value. You must be able to tell if a coin is genuine. If it is, look it up to see the weight and carat. If you don't have the skill and experience to tell if it is genuine (this is a specialist skill) ask a numismatist. For gold Sovereigns we have a Sovereign Tester. -

Can this detect gold plate from solid gold
Yes.
You must file the item (a fine needle-file is included) to remove any plating, though only over a tiny area, and in a place where it won't be noticeable.
This applies to every electronic tester, even XRF testers (they cost £10,000.00 to £20,000).
