The ultimate professional workshop magnifier. For serious art renovation, for lathe work, for repairing larger antiques, even for reading (it's the only magnifier that covers most of a page at a time).

The arm ("Anglepoise") on this model has a clamp to fix to the workbench / table, very flexible, can even be positioned for lathe work.

The same lens is available with a clamp to fix to the edge of ta workbench (if you prefer this, select it from the drop-down option).

When comparing these magnifiers on the internet always look at the lens size, this is often not stated, making tiny magnifiers look like serious bench magnifiers.

The Photos

The photos looking through the lens have not been enhanced, this really is the magnification. Because it was broad daylight we forgot to turn the light on, which would have made the image brighter and more spectacular.

In the photo of Janet (who works in the warehouse) using the magnifier, she really is using it - her eyes are a comfortable distance from the lens and the item is in focus. The lens can be positioned for use sitting down or standing up.

Which Model?

The lens is the same on both models.

With a clamp (701L-2) gives the furthest reach (can be pulled forward further) and is easier to fold out the way, keeps the workbench clear for other equipment. However, you will need room for the clamp, ideally clamping it to the back of the bench so that you can pull it forward - which won't work if the bench is pushed up tightly against a wall. Also, you might not want to clamp this massive magnifier to your polished oak dining room table.

With a base (sits on a table, 702BT) is a simple choice, especially for domestic tables rather than workbenches. Although the base is large () it's completely flat so it becomes part of the table, you don't lose any space.

Mag, size, WD

Magnification, lens size, working distance.

Be aware that lens size, magnification and working distance are connected. This is due to the laws of physics, it is not a choice, this applies to all simple lenses (i.e. not microscopes and telescopes).

You want the largest lens? A 150mm diameter lens will give a magnification somewhere between about 1.2X and 2X with a working distance somewhere between 250 and 350mm (10 to 14 inches). Ample room to manoeuvre a large object but not very powerful.

You want a powerful lens?  8X magnification will give you a lens of 15 to 25mm in diameter and a working distance of about 25mm (1 inch).

You want a very large lens with a high magnification? This is not possible with a simple lens. Consider one of the following: a surgeon’s binocular headband magnifier (it uses two small telescopes not ‘simple’ lenses); a low-power bench microscope (but select the lowest magnification) or a video microscope
