Summary

  • Tests for diamond and Moissanite and ruby/sapphire.
  • The top of the tester lights up, so there are no words to read, no scale of LED lights, and each result has a characteristic bleep, so you don't even have to look at the lights. Can be used right-handed or left-handed.
  • To see an article all about diamond testing click here.
  • Guarantee, 1 year.

Operation

Switch on, wait for it to warm up. The entire top lights up, a different colour for each of: Metal Alert (i.e. you missed the stone and touched the setting), Diamond, Moissanite, Sapphire/Ruby.

Technical

PHYSICAL

Dimensions: 6¼"X1½"X¾" 155X38X20mm

Weight: 80g

Tip: can test stones down to 0.02ct (2pt) in size.

Operating temperature: recommended between 18 and 27 degrees C (64 to 81 degrees F). Though tests show it works fine down to 15 degrees C. (59 degrees F).

RESPONSE TIME

Warm-up time when switched on: 20 to 30 seconds

Testing: result in 1 or 2 seconds

Warm-up time between tests: 2 or 3 seconds

UV

There's a switch to operate both the tester and the UV light at the same time. A UV light gives more reliable results on Moissanite.

POWER

One PP3 battery (supplied).
Optional 9 volt power supply (mains adaptor)

Battery life: don't know, a few thousand tests?

Low-battery indicator: none, when it fails to warm up, it needs a new battery

Auto-shut-off: yes, it bleeps then turns itself off if not used for five minutes.

ACCESSORIES / PRESENTATION

  • fitted case
  • carrying strap
  • stone-holder
  • polishing cloth (to remove any surface grease-free before testing)
  • instructions
  • unique system for recording the readings (no app. required): a note pad

RELIABILITY

For testing diamonds and Moissanite, I haven't tested thousands of stones but I estimate that you would get the correct result over 95% of the time.

For testing ruby and sapphire, if it reads ruby/sapphire there's a pretty good chance it's ruby or sapphire. However, the readings for ruby/sapphire overlap with other stones (see my chart) - a lot of chrysoberyl and topaz will give the same reading as ruby/sapphire, as will some spinel. Any large very cold stone will also read ruby/sapphire (so please check that stones are at room temperature when tested).

Developed a fault in the guarantee period (1 year): 2%

Limitations

There are now Moissanites that will read "diamond" on this tester. A few years ago, these Moissanites didn't exist; a few months ago they were very rare; they are now becoming quite common.

Alternatives

Please note, none of these testers will distinguish natural stones from synthetic stones. "Synthetic" is a scientific term meaning 'made by man in a factory/laboratory to the same formula found in nature'. The two are usually indistinguishable, synthetic diamond is diamond (read about synthetic diamond testers and see our ARI and ARETE models).

The testers below are to distinguish diamond from non-diamond (simulant/imitation).

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • This shows on & uv on the same aide but the exterior on gemtrue shows them on separate sides? Are they the same?..

The version shown on the Gemtrue web site can only (as you have noticed) be switched to ON or UV. This is the version you get when you buy from other suppliers.
To work properly on Moissasnite you must test the stone while the UV light is shining on the stone.

We have therefore had this made expecially for us, with the electronics re-wired so that you can use the tester with the UV light shining.
The only reason they enable you to turn the UV light off at all - is that it saves battery power.

  • How would this tester indicate if a stone I have is glass - example: I am testing if a stone is ruby. If it is a ruby I see it light red, but if it glass what would happen? Would it not light up red? Thanks

If it’s not diamond, Moissanite or ruby/sapphire – then nothing at all happens, no light, no sound

  • Does this product test for other stones such as topaz?

    No.

  • I bought this mnodel from you 2yrs ago, it just keeps flashing red and wont test properly, do you repair them, if so how much? Many thanks

Unfortunately, we do not repair this multi tester. The red flashing light usually means that the tester needs a new battery. I hope you will find this helpful.

  • How does this model compares to the SAM Presidium tester? Thanks.

    The Sam is better.

  • Will this work for colored diamonds

    Yes.

  • Hello, I bought this type of tester from you a couple of years ago and it has done sterling work. Unfortunately, when testing known diamonds that previously showed blue, the tester now only displays 5 green lights (like moissanite). It shows green on all diamonds now. Can this be fixed. thank you

    DIAMOND TESTER TROUBLESHOOTING

The most likely reason for inconsistent readings is that the test-tip is dirty, clean it by rubbing it in a circular motion on a clean piece of paper (see diagram in instruction manual). Don’t be shy about this, you must be firm enough to remove any ‘tarnish’ from the end of the tip. As stated in the instructions, this is something you must do regularly.

The second most likely reason is that the stone is greasy, clean the area that you will test by wiping it firmly with a very clean cloth, e.g. a soft cotton cloth (do not use a hanky that happens to be in your pocket or your shirt sleeve or kitchen towel).

Failing the above, please look at our troubleshooting guide, this will fix 90% of problems:
