Summary

This is the type used by surgeons, instead of 'simple' lenses, they have a pair or very high quality tiny telescopes. This enables a unique combination of high magnification with a long working distance (choose the one that is best for you).

Guarantee: 1 year.

Detail

The optical quality of these is so good that you do not need high magnification, see our guide. As regards the working distance, sit at your workplace, sit comfortably upright, see how far it is from your eyes to where your hands are working.

Q. Why are these so expensive?
A. Because the optical quality is so good.

Q. Why are these so cheap?
A. Because they are not custom-made for your eyes, you might have to spend several minutes collimating (setting them up) these for your eyes - though you only have to do this once. That's why I call them. "surgeons-type", actual surgeons will spend £2000.00 on a model that is fixed (no adjustments) to line up with their eyes.
That said, these are a good choice for dentists, who might not have the same budget as an operating theatre.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Hello. I need magnification of some sort to help when working with my lathe and small milling machine in my home workshop. I also wear prescription glasses, and safety specs which fit over my glasses. Would the Binocmag-S4 surgeons type magnifier fit over my safety specs? Thanks.

To work best, the eyepiece of the magnifier has to be close to your eye. This works fine with spectacles but will probably not work with safety specs.

  • Hi I was looking at the 4X but think 3-4mm for depth/field of view seems tiny. Are you sure it would be this bad? Thanks.

Yes BUT this is a bit of a guess, measured by looking through it and using a tape measure not by doing mathematical calculations.

In practice it really isn't that bad because, unlike a handheld magnifier, you instinctively keep moving you head to keep it in focus (though that doesn't help for large objects such as gluing the side of a vase...it's not meant for large objects!).

These 'surgeons-type' lenses are not 'simple' lenses, they are mini-telescopes, so the optics work slightly differently from a 'simple' lens;  another difference is that the magnification appears to be far higher than a 'simple’ 4X lens.

  • What is the depth of field and field of view with these lenses?

It depends on the magnification and I dont' know exactly (I'd have to measure every single one), but approximately: a couple of cm for the weakest magnifications, probably 3 or 4mm for the strongest magnfication, both for depth of field and field of view.
