| Magnets
WHEN TESTING PRECIOUS METALS: When you have dozens of small items the very first test is easy: pull out everything that's magnetic. Gold, silver and platinum are not magnetic - so if it's magnetic, bin it! Beware, however, of steel - some steel is not magnetic.
WHEN TESTING ANTIQUES: Items that are supposed to be brass, copper or bronze will not be magnetic, but very often items are plated. So if the magnet sticks to an item that SHOULD be copper (or brass or bronze), it's something-magnetic plated with...probably copper.
