TESTING PRECIOUS METALS. When you have dozens of small items the very first test is easy: pull out everything that's magnetic. Gold, silver and platinum are not magnetic - so if it's magnetic, bin it! Beware, however, of steel - some steel is not magnetic. TESTING ANTIQUES. Items that are supposed to be copper (or brass or bronze) will not be magnetic. So if the magnet sticks on a supposedly copper (or brass or bronze) it must be something-magnetic that is plated.
