Three bottle tester, tests for all carats of gold and also silver.

Each acid changes colour when applied to the metal, and the colour (and the speed of the reaction) will tell you if it is gold, and the carat. Also tests for silver.

To read an article about testing precious metals click here

Supplied in strong wooden box which contains the accessories and instructions (there is also a summary of the instructions fixed to lid). The instructions are very simple, there are even instructions for the colour blind, you don't have to distinguish between green, grey and brown.

This is THE 'industry standard' tester. The simplest (easy to use) set on the market. Strong wooden box for safety, accessories included, childproof bottles. We have been manufacturing this model since 1986.

Accessories: steel needle file, magnet.

The first bottle tells you if the metal is not gold or 9ct or better than 9ct.

The second bottle tells you if the metal is 14ct, 18ct, 22ct or 24ct (and it's accurate enough to gauge 'in between' these readings)

The third bottle tests for silver (Sterling, 925 grade or 'continental' .800).

Each bottle contains enough fluid for 100 to 150 tests and has a shelf life of between one and two years (the date of manufacture is printed on each label). Each bottle is transparent so that you can see how much fluid remains.

The fluids are acid - you will need a steady hand and good eyesight; the bottles must be kept well away from children and stored upright in a cool place - if this is not possible DO NOT buy one of these.

Four bottle tester, tests for all carats of gold and also silver (identical to the QUICKTEST-3), plus a fourth bottle for platinum.

Each acid changes colour when applied, and the colour (and the speed of the reaction) tells you what the metal is.

Troytest is the 'original' precious metal tester, invented in 1949.

Each bottle contains enough fluid for 100 to 150 tests and has a shelf life of between one and two years (the date of manufacture is printed on each label). Each bottle is transparent so that you can see how much fluid remains.

Accessories: steel needle file, magnet on box, instructions sheet, chart (indicator disc), test-papers, polishing paper. They all fit inside the wooden box with the bottles.

The first bottle tells you if the metal is 9ct or not gold ('base' metal) or better than 9ct.

The second bottle tells you if the metal is 14ct, 18ct, 22ct or 24ct (and it's accurate enough to gauge 'in between' these readings).

The third bottle tests for silver (Sterling, 925 grade or 'continental' .800).

The fourth bottle (known as the 'green' bottle or the 'platinum' bottle) distinguishes 14ct white gold and 18ct white gold from steel (which give similar readings), and at the same time tests for platinum.

Supplied in strong wooden box which contains the accessories and. The reactions are very clear, you don't have to distinguish between green, grey and brown.

The fluids are acid - you will need a steady hand and good eyesight; the bottles must be kept well away from children and stored upright in a cool place - if this is not possible DO NOT buy one of these.

Single bottle of acid in strong wooden box, with steel needle file and instructions.

Each acid changes colour when applied, and the colour (and the speed of the reaction) tells you what the metal is.

Choose between the silver, 9ct or platinum fluids.

To read an article about testing precious metals click here

Single bottle in strong wooden box plus steel needle file and instructions.

Tests for silver. A good choice if you deal only in silver and really have no use for gold testers.

The reaction is clear and dramatic on Sterling silver (92.5% pure, ".925") and a keen eye can see an even stronger reaction on pure (.999) silver. On "low grade" silver the reaction is less pronounced, you can see a slight reaction on .800 or .750 silver.

Steel needle file and instructions included.

Each bottle contains enough fluid for 100 to 150 tests and has a shelf life of between one and two years (the date of manufacture is printed on each label).

Each bottle is transparent so that you can see how much fluid remains.

Each plastic bottle has a childproof cap.

Single bottle in strong wooden box plus steel needle file and instructions.

Will tell you if an item is not gold or if it is 9ct or if it is better than 9ct. If it is better than 9ct it WON'T tell you how much better (you will need the QUICKTEST-3 set instead).

Steel needle file and instructions included.

Single bottle in strong wooden box plus steel needle file and instructions.

For white metals that you know, from other tests, are not silver and are not 9ct gold. Will distinguish 14ct or 18ct white gold from platinum and steel. HOWEVER, this bottle must be used in conjunction with the 18ct fluid from a Quicktest or Troytest set, it cannot be used on its own. So if you already have a 3-bottle or 4-bottle testing set, and wish to add platinum testing, this is the one to go for, but please do not buy this bottle unless you already have a set with the 18ct bottle.

This is the only 'affordable' (as opposed to the £12,000.00 XRF machines) gold tester that is:

- simple to use
- very fast
- does not use an acid contact fluid

This is the electronic gold tester I would recommend for anyone who buys gold as part (or all) of their living.

This is the best electronic gold tester I have seen so far (apart from XRF testers at about £12,000.00) - and compared with XRF testers, the AGT1 really is a low-cost tester that works well.

Click here to see a full review

FEATURES

The AGT1 is the only electronic gold tester (apart from XRF) that is faster to use than the traditional acid test. Typically, a test takes 2 or 3 seconds. Compare this with other testers (both acid-only and electronic) which are fiddly and can take over a minute per test. This DOES make a difference if you have 20 items to test and a queue of customers!

You do have to regularly calibrate the AGT1, but this takes less than 10 seconds, there is no other preparation (apart from filing the item). With other electronic gold testers, dispensing the acid / gel and testing is very slow, and cleaning up afterwards takes 2 or 3mns.

No acid involved (unlike chemical tests); no messy contact fluids of gel dispensers (which are always acid) unlike other electronic testers.

The probe will last for up to 5000 tests, replacement probes are not expensive.

Also tests platinum.

Each AGT1 is supplied with a case and also a sample of 14ct gold for calibration.

LIMITATIONS

Compared with other "low cost" (not XRF) testers, the AGT1 is expensive (£399.00). 'Cheapie' electronic testers tend to cost £100.00 (generally useless) to £200.00 (slow and fiddly); sets of acids testers start at £40.00.

As with all testers (including all other electronic gold testers) the item must be filed first, both to cut through any gold plating, and to remove surface contamination.

It's American so they use the abbreviation "K" for Karat rather than our "ct" for Carat, and they refer to 10ct rather than our 9ct. No great problem, just worth noting.

It does not test silver.

Pick any of the following from the drop-down list above:

The Gold & Silver Buyer's Handbook (an invaluable guide to testing, buying, and selling gold)

Extra calibration sample, small (approx. 0.5g); extra calibration sample, large (approx. 1g) £27.50.

Extra probe £29.50

There is no acid, there are no export restrictions.

Fill the 'well' with activator fluid, connect the crocodile clip to the item, dip the item in the fluid, lights indicate the purity (carat). Will test through very thin gold plating only. The lights indicate 9ct, 10ct, 12ct, 14ct, 16ct, 20ct, 22ct and 24ct.

GOOD POINTS

Many people like to see a result in lights rather than a chemical reaction.
This really is one of the cheapest electronic gold testers that actually works.
This is by far the best of the various Mizar models.
There is no meter, no 'scale', no speed of a chemical reaction to observe, there are just a row of lights, each for a different carat, you do not have to use any judgement

BAD POINTS

Not having to use your judgement in observing the result is NOT necessarily good - you will never know if the machine is rounding the result up or down. So if, for instance, you see the "18ct" light, it MIGHT be 18ct, but it might be closer to 14ct or closer to 22ct.
The acid contact fluid will dissolve the sensor if it is not cleaned meticulously after every use. Once the sensor is damaged, the tester is beyond repair.
They provide a standard eraser to clean the gold, but this is not good enough to remove plating. The machine will NOT test through plating.
You need good eyesight and a steady hand to place the test-item into the tiny well of liquid, without touching the sensor.
It uses acid as a contact fluid.
Does not test silver or platinum.

The contact fluid is acid, it must be kept well away from children and stored upright in a cool place - if this is not possible DO NOT buy one of these.
