Tough construction with folding lid, difficult to damage with lid closed (though take care not to overload it, as with all 0.001g scales, it's very sensitive!)

Technical Specification

RESOLUTION / CAPACITY: 20g / 0.001g.

Also switchable to ounces (oz), Troy ounces (ozT), pennyweight (dwt), grains (gn) and carats (ct)

- Troy ounce (ozT) for gold and silver (and was once used for letters and parcels)

- grams, metric. Today everyone weighs gold in grams. But dealers tend to weigh silver in Troy ounces.

- ounce (manufacturers say, 'English Ounce', correct term is Ounce Avoirdupois) for food

- Pennyweight (dwt), pre-decimal system, still used in USA

- Carat (ct) for gemstones and diamonds, not to be confused with carat as gold purity).

- Grains, originally used for weighing gold (based on a grain of wheat), today used for weighing powder for ammunition or catalysts

SIZE: the balance 140 X 85 X 20mm (5½ X 3¼ X ¾ inches); weighing platform 75 X 60 mm diameter; screen size 42mm X 20mm

POWER: two AAA batteries (included)

Guarantee

1 year. This covers manufacturing faults only, it excludes normal wear and tear, bowls, trays, finishes, clasps, hinges, feet, AC adaptors and batteries; it also excludes being overloaded / dropped (e.g. error messages EEE, 0-Ld, or OUEr). The guarantee is invalid if the scale shows signs of foreign material (e.g. residues of herbs, chemicals, corrosion, spilt tea).

CALIBRATION

Inaccurate readings can be fixed by calibrating the scale, this is something that is very easy for you to do yourself with the two 10g weights supplied. Giving inaccurate readings does not mean it is broken - all electronic measuring devices need calibrating every now and again, see calibrating weighing machines

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • What is the minimum weight this can weigh. Can it weight 0.001g?

    Yes, 0.001g.

  • Does it really weigh down to 0.001g or is there a small tolerance of +/ -

The resolution ('readability') is 0.001g.  As you point out, accuracy ('tolerance') is not the same as resolution.

The manufacturers of cheap scales never state the accuracy (if you paying several hundred pounds for a scale you would expect to be given accuracy). 'Accuracy' is a percentage. My best guess is that the accuracy will be about 0.2%.

    Examples:

if you are weighing 0.03g the reading should be correct to within 0.00006g (since the scale only reads to 0.001g, the reading should be correct!)
if you are weighing 1.5g the reading should be correct to within 0.003g
if you are weighing 20g, the reading should be corect to within 0.04g.

  • Do the scales read down 0.000? And also is 20g the max amount to put on. I take it the scales are sensitive

Answers to your questions: yes, yes, and yes.
