But what is so good about this magnifier is its lightweight construction, it is SO lightweight that you can hold it for ages without straining.

According to the packaging the little it is 2.5X magnification, so that is exactly how I describe it. Personally, I don't think it's that powerful, but it doesn't matter, if it does the job, it does the job. And if it's not good enough, simply send it back within 14 days. By way of recommendation: I keep one of these in the car for myself.

5x50 Hand Reader, best quality at a sensible price Ref: 5x50-ed

A lightweight 50mm lens of exceptional quality. In my opinion there really isn't much to choose between this and the Zeiss lenses listed below. If you really do have difficulty reading and have tried lesser lenses, I would recommend trying this one before resorting to spending £40.00 to £50.00 on a Zeiss.

Zeiss Hand Readers Ref: Zeiss-hmag

Best quality magnifier, recommended for the partially-sighted when 'lesser' magnifiers have failed to satisfy.

5X, 65mm dia. £39.00

This IS the best quality (optically) AND the most powerful (high magnification) of all. At this magnification you will see only 3 or 4 words at a time which is a frustrating way to read a book. But if you have very severe eye problems, this might be the only magnification that works. On the other hand, if your eye condition is so bad that no magnifier will help, then spending £39.00 won't be of any benifit (as with all our new items, you may return it within 14 days if not suitable).

REMEMBER: size and magnification are linked: larger size = lower magnification; higher magnification = smaller size, there simply isn't any choice about this. It is best to start with the largest (weakest) magnifier because it covers the largest reading area, and then if you really have to, upgrade to a more powerful, but smaller, magnifier.

Russian Hand Magnifiers Ref: Russ-mag

5X 50mm diameter
It's so powerful that you will only see 3 or 4 words at a time, but if you have very poor eyesight (or wish to read the VERY tiny print on forms and on supermarket packaging) then this is a good choice. However, if your eye problems are so severe that no magnifier seems to work, you may need to go for the Zeiss hand reader, above. Or the 'hedghog' magnifier below.

The most powerful of all, but at this power you will only be able to read 1 or 2 words at a time (that's h ow lenses work, there is no choice about this, the more powerful the lens the less you will see in area).
