Beware of balances you see advertised in "English" ounces, it is the ounce Avoirfupois used for weighing food, it is not the same as the Troy ounce used for weighing gold and silver.

Large Pesola (Swiss) spring balance, 5Kg.

A large spring balance (370mm long X 32mm diameter)
for weighing silver (approx. 160 ozTroy) or heavy-ish parcels (up to 5Kg)
Two advanced features: the scale is printed twice, right-way and upside-down, so that you can choose the most convenient way to hang the item; there's a 'marker' that marks the position on the scale after you've removed the item so that you don't have to struggle to hold a heavy item and read the scale.
The scale is marked in metric only, we will automatically include a pocket calculator and a sticky tab with conversions (including metric to Troy ounces) OR you may tick the box below to order a calculator with the metric-to-Troy calculation pre-programmed.
Summary of specification: 379mm long X 32mm diameter. Capacity 5Kg, the divisions are clear and easy to read at 50g intervals, though you CAN read between the divisions if you need for the nearest 25g. The accuracy is (possible error) is 0.3% - that's comparable with the digital balances.

The ounces on this balance are "English ounces" = ounce Avoirdupois That's the ounce used for weighing food (28g) NOT the Troy ounce used for weighing precious metals (31.1g).
This IS a genuine Pesola (Swiss) balance, the low price is because I bought a 'job lot' last year....and I have just a handful remaining.

Small and lightweight (it's TINY) with markings in 100g divisions, accurate to the nearest 200g.
Summary of specification: 65mm long X 13mm square. I can't actually think of a use for this.
I include these because
a) I like to show my customers that you can get cheap balances and you can get expensive balances and you get what you pay for and
b) I bought them for much less than £2.00.

Chinese Spring Balance, 100g

Chinese-made 2g. divisions to 100g. Length of scale 75mm, total length 220m, diameter 12mm.
LOOKS like the Pesola balances, but Chinese-made not Swiss.
These are optomistically branded "Lab Scale" but everything about it is tacky - the clips discolour in the air (let alone if you get them wet), please don't try to adjust the spring (it will never go back to zero), please don't expect it to be accuarte like the Swiss models...but it is a quarter of the price of the Swiss models...and I suppose it is OK, "for just ocassional use".

Hanging Balance 100g.
Ref: POSTALSCALE
Based on the Victorian design (they made these in brass, elaborately hand-engraved)...though this one is made on a machine in China.
Capacity 100g. As you see from the picture, the divisions start off quite wide apart and get narrower.
Perfect as a letter balance if you merely need to know if the item weighs less than 100g.

As you see from the photograph this is just a standard calculator. The photograph shows the original packaging, I will remove it from the packaging and program the LOCAL button to convert from grams to Troy ounces. You simply enter a number (e.g. 155) then touch the conversion button, and the answer is displayed (e.g. 155g = 4.983oz).
