Large reading magnifier with light Ref: large-reader-L

Lens 100 X 50mm, magnification 3X, takes two Size A batteries (not supplied), weight including batteries 450g.

This is a Far-Eastern copy of a special magnifier for the partially-sighted. The originals are made by various European manufacturers and sell for between £60.00 and £80.00. The reason the European versions are so expensive is that they use very special distortion-free lenses. This one uses an ordinary lens. The light is bright, the lens is very large, the magnification is good, the lens even tilts so that you don't have to pear down into it, all good features. But the image is slightly distorted. That might not bother you (you might not even notice) but for me, as an optical dealer, that is a no-no!

Stand Magnfier with light Ref: stand-2X130-L

We sell this very same one without the light, see under "Larger magnifiers on stands". The problem with this one is that the light (which is fixed) rarely points where you want (since the lens is fully adjustable), and also the light isn't very bright, any half-decent lighting is better than the light on the magnifier. I suppose it would be quite good for doing crafts in a field in the middle of the night.

Combined hand magnifier and stand magnifier Ref: 3X60-T

I must admit that this is beautifully-made: nice lens, solid construction, nice to handle...but technically it doesn't quite work.

It folds flat to form an illuminated handheld magnifier, or opens up (as pictured) to form an adjustable magnifier on a stand. The problem is that it's nearly impossible to get the light to shine on the object. The magnifier adjusts easily. But the light is fixed. So most of the time the light is pointing in the wrong direction. Also, the light isn't very powerful, if you're working under decent lighting conditions you won't see the light in the magnifier at all. I must thank the importer who sent me this as a sample but, alas, this one is a no-no for me.

Magnifier with built-in tweezers Ref: mag-tweez

You see these in gadget catalogues, an incredible idea, a magnifier with built-in tweezers so that you can see what you're doing without having to hold them both at the same time.

I can assure you that it never works. Keeping the magnifier in focus whilst continually changing the position of both tweezers and object is just not possible. It's like attaching a thimble to a needle and pretending it makes sewing easier.

TIP: buy some tweezers from the TOOLS section and a hands-free magnifier from the WATCHMAKERS EYEGLASSES section.

Illuminated round-the-neck fresnels Ref: fres-neck-T

It has a light, it hangs around the neck as a hands-free magnfier, there are three fresnels (flat magnifiers) that can be slotted in: 2X, 4X and 6X magnifications, and the quality isn't too bad.

The problem I have with these is that they have been out on display at many dozens of exhibitions over the last six years and in all that time I've sold just two. I actually think these are quite good...apart from the fact that nobody will buy them. Another problem is that it LOOKS too complicated, I don't think it's clear how you are meant to assemble it or which way up to use it. Given time and effort this IS quite an effective little gadget, but from a commercial point of view it is not something I would recommend.

PAGE-SIZE FRESNEL ON STAND, FULLY ADJUSTABLE Ref: FRES-STAND

Page-size Fresnel (flat) magnifier on heavy stand, easily adjustable to any angle.

This is SUCH a good idea, and the mechanism is very effective, it is VERY easy to adjust the magnifier to any angle.

However, the quality of the lens is awful, what you gain in magnification you lose in quality of image - the image is so dim and fuzzy that it's painful.

This is one of those ideas which is simply "too good to be true". I'm sure it IS possible to make one of these in high quality...but I've never seen one.
